THE MATERIALS THAT MAKE QUALITY BODY JEWELRY

Picture
TITANIUM
Though there are many commercially used grades of titanium, the only recommended for use in piercing jewelry by the APP is 6Al4V implant grade titanium that is ASTM F136 compliant.  It’s widely used in our industry due to its nickel free content which rarely induces an allergic reaction in its wearers.  Titanium is also highly resistant to corrosion which make it less likely than other materials to react with body fluids. Being a lightweight metal (around 60% the weight of stainless steel given the same volume), makes titanium quite appealing for a piece of body jewelry. Aesthetically titanium has another draw; not only is it a lustrous, silver-colored metal but it can be anodized in several brilliant colors.

GOLD
Pure gold (24k) is very soft & is usually alloyed with base metals for use in jewelry to make it harder.  Alloys with lower karat ratings, typically 10k, contain higher percentages of copper or other base metals.  14k & 18k gold used for professional body jewelry does not contain any silver or nickel.  High quality gold jewelry is polished to a mirrored finish & is always solid, never tubing or hollow.  Gold is hypoallergenic, however, advancements in metal alloying have made titanium a superior jewelry material option for people with sensitive skin.

NIOBIUM
Niobium is a bit heavier than titanium but is also hypoallergenic and does not react with body fluids. You may have noticed that Niobium lacks a rating from the ASTM, this is because Niobium is elemental; nothing is added to the metal, which eliminates the need for a rating, and this is part of the reason it is so biocompatible.  It’s a great alternative for most people with metal allergies because there are no nickel or copper or other base metal alloys in it.  Niobium is another metal that can be anodized for colors similar to those produced with titanium or heat treated to create a black finish.  Because the metal is anodized/heat treated, not coated, the colouring will not chip or peel off.

We stock flat back labret posts in both an internally threaded or a push fit design.  Each has their own unique set of benefits & one style may be recommended over the other for certain piercings.
Either option is produced by the industries leading manufacturers out of ASTM F136 Titanium & hand polished to a microscopically smooth finish.
*an indication of low quality jewelry is if the threading is on the post rather then the ball.  That's externally threaded & doesn't meet APP standards for acceptable body jewelry.
